History of the 5 Franchi AN 10 (1802) — Repubblica Subalpina

The Subalpine Republic (Repubblica Subalpina) was the short-lived French client state established in Piedmont in 1800 after Napoleon's victory at Marengo, replacing the briefly restored Kingdom of Sardinia. It lasted less than two years before Piedmont was directly annexed into France in September 1802. During this brief existence the republic struck coinage following the French revolutionary monetary system, with denominations in Franchi rather than the traditional Lire or Soldi of the Savoy monarchy. The 5 Franchi of AN 10 was minted at Turin (mintmark T) in .900 silver, following the same weight standard as the French 5 Francs. Because the Subalpine Republic existed for only two minting seasons, its coinage is rare and highly regarded by collectors of Italian pre-unification numismatics and Napoleonic-era coins alike.
