History of the 10 Lire 1991 Spighe
The 10 Lire Spighe was issued continuously from 1951 to 2001, making it one of the longest-running denominations of the Italian Republic. The obverse features the allegorical head of Italia, sculpted by Giuseppe Romagnoli, while the reverse shows two wheat ears (spighe di grano) designed by Pietro Giampaoli — a symbol of agricultural prosperity in postwar Italy. The coin was struck entirely in aluminium, a metal chosen for its light weight and low production cost. By 1991 the series was well into its fourth decade of circulation, widely familiar to every Italian. The denomination was demonetised on 28 February 2002 with the introduction of the euro, closing a fifty-year chapter of Italian everyday coinage.
